Case-working

From the first days of the war in Ukraine, we got involved in supporting non-Ukrainian refugees from Ukraine, who very often remained excluded from the official humanitarian aid system. In the photo is Viktoria, who stayed with her multi-generational family and a dog in a hostel, which we ran in cooperation with Nowy Teatr in Warsaw.

We are a part of Grupa Granica, an informal initiative created in response to the humanitarian crisis at the Polish-Belarusian border, where human rights continue to be violated. Grupa Granica is an informal coalition, supported in specific areas by NGOs, institutions and individuals. It has been operating continuously since August 2021.

During this time, we managed to create mechanisms for providing humanitarian, legal and medical assistance in very difficult conditions related to the humanitarian crisis, systematic violations of the law by state officials and the criminalization of migration and humanitarian aid. Thanks to the activities carried out by our informal coalition, we were able to support many migrants, and in some cases prevent further deaths at the Polish-Belarusian border.

As part of this project, we have created a group to connect volunteers, including those with refugee experience, to allow them to communicate their priorities and their perspective on things. The purpose of creating this group was to strengthen the community of migrants and for them to promote their own activities.

The second part of the project was a grant competition which allowed refugees to implement projects which strengthen, activate and network their community, as well as educational and cultural projects. The competition enabled the winners to carry out self-advocating projects based on their own diagnosis of their community's needs.

You dance=you help. RefugeesDanceClub is a grassroots initiative founded by refugees who wanted to share their national dances. And so we started dancing, twisting and twirling at BAZA by Inclusive.Buzz. The classes are run by Manzi from Rwanda, Zakaria from Morocco and Ira from Ukraine. They all fled Ukraine due to Russian aggression and are now trying to start a new life in Poland by creating this initiative. We support RefugeesDanceClub because we know that refugees want to play a more active and decisive role, and have a direct impact on integration.

We support refugees on a case-by-case basis and offer help suited to their needs. The most common topics are finding an apartment to rent and looking for a job. We offer help with writing resumes, arrange medical appointments, help with translations, support in relocation, connect with lawyers and arrange psychotherapy. For those in crisis of homelessness, we find safe housing and plan the next steps of holistic support. Such cooperation is a complex and lengthy process. We believe it is one of the most effective ways to strengthen individuals and support them in becoming independent.

  • indoor shoes like flip-flops, sneakers (depending on the needs)

  • warm jackets, hats, scarfs, gloves, warm sweaters, pants

  • short-sleeved and long-sleeved shirts

  • tracksuits, pyjamas, underwear

  • shampoo, shower gel, toothbrush and toothpaste

Packages for women include hijabs or headscarves, long dresses or skirts, toiletries and hygiene products, and small things for children.
